John O’Kane
Professor Emeritus Department of Public Management and Policy- Biography
John O’Kane, MSW, CFRE, is a Professor Emeritus in the Public Management and Policy Department and the principal of John O’Kane Consulting. In more than fifty years of work in the nonprofit sector, he has had experience with personnel management, organizational development, training, consulting and fundraising.
After twenty-five+ years, John recently retired from the Atlanta fundraising consulting firm of Coxe Curry & Associates. There he worked with over 350 clients focusing of faith-based, health and human service, school and civic and community nonprofits. Prior to Coxe Curry & Associates, John served as vice president of human resources with the United Way of Metro Atlanta. At United Way, he managed the personnel, training and volunteer functions for a staff of over 100. He was also responsible for planning, coordinating and delivering training and consultation to volunteers and staff of metro Atlanta nonprofit organizations. Before working at United Way, John served as executive director of the Mental Health Association of Metropolitan Atlanta and in other health association positions in Ohio, Indiana and Missouri.
John has served on numerous boards of directors and advisory councils including: the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Atlanta Chapter, the Georgia Society of Association Executives and the National Academy of Volunteerism. (faculty) He is a past president of the Kiwanis Club of Atlanta and a past board member of the Kiwanis Atlanta Foundation and current board member of the Georgia District Kiwanis Foundation. He is past chair and a current member of the Community Advisory Board of the Junior League of Atlanta and the Board of Visitors of the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Conyers, Georgia. John is a Leadership Atlanta graduate, recognized as a Personality of the South and as an Outstanding Young Man in America.
John earned a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Washington University in St. Louis and a B.A. from Marian University in Indianapolis. He has been a Certified Fundraising Executive since 1988.
