ATLANTA—Two of nine national awards granted by the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance (NLA) this year recognized the people and programs of Georgia State University’s NLA chapter.
Alumna Lauren Kline Jeong (B.S. in Public Policy ’13) was named the CNP Emerging Leader of the Year.
Georgia State University tied with Northern Iowa for the Campus Program Excellence, Outstanding Student Association Fundraising honor. Alumna Amber Slyter (M.P.A. ‘16), an academic specialist in the Department of Public Management and Policy and chapter director for Georgia State’s NLA chapter, accepted this award. Slyter, whose MPA concentration was in nonprofit management, earned her Certified Nonprofit Professional (CNP) certificate from the NLA.
Additionally, Krista Marie MacCallum (B.S. in Public Policy ‘18) was named the 2018 NLA Student of the Year for the Georgia State University chapter. The awards were granted during the NLA’s 2019 Alliance Management Institute in Orlando in January.
Lauren Kline Jeong, CNP Emerging Leader of the Year
Kline Jeong works to support nonprofits in their efforts to adopt best practices in her work as a program associate for the Community Foundation of Atlanta (CFA). She became interested in this career path in high school, where she started a nonprofit to help spread awareness about human trafficking.
“It was an epic failure,” she said, “but the venture exposed me to the importance of the sector, as well as its challenges. I’ve learned there are lots of organizations doing great work, but unfortunately there aren’t always visible opportunities for people to help. I wanted to see how I could make the sector more effective and make their work—and their needs—more visible to the public.
Kline Jeong worked closely with Georgia State’s NLA chapter while earning her degree with a concentration in nonprofit leadership. Upon graduating, she interned at Prevent Child Abuse Atlanta and the Georgia Center for Nonprofits before joining the CFA a few years ago.
She is also working towards an MBA to strengthen her skillset. “So much of my role involves working across sectors and building revenue streams. I want to learn more about those intersections and how I can best support nonprofits through earned income.”
Krista Marie MacCallum, NLA GSU Chapter Student of the Year
MacCallum serves as a graduate coordinator for the GSU NLA chapter while pursuing a Master of Arts in Creative and Innovative Education (MACIE). She served as the member relations chair for the NLA Executive Board during 2017-2018 and helped attract 40 new dues-paying members. She also created programs, organized and led information session, and presented in a panel discussion during the chapter’s Spring Mini-Conference, ‘Millennial Giving.’”
MacCallum works as a paraprofessional in the BEGIN/Ga PINES toddler class and as an instructor in the afterschool program at the Center for the Visually Impaired.
“This is truly my dream job, as it combines my passion for the nonprofit sector with my passion for working with kids who have been impacted by vision loss,” she said. “I hope to continue to work with the Center for the Visually Impaired and gain more knowledge and experience in both nonprofit leadership and special education.”
